The girl at the right is Josie and on the left is our hero Sophie, who was maybe 5 months old when the picture was taken at her orphanage. And rather than try to retell the story of how we came to know who that girl is, let me quote Josie's mom who tells it perfectly:
I have spent the last month wondering about the friend pictured with Josie. I could guess a few things -- she was older than Josie and therefore was probably placed for adoption before Josie. I checked the members list of our SWI Yahoo group to see who joined from late 05-early 06. Then I started cruising the referral photos posted by the parents of Chongyang SWI babies. On looks alone, I narrowed my search down to two little girls.
I'm so pleased to report that my hunch was confirmed. ... Both Sophie and Josie were placed in foster care, so they weren't together like this for long. But, it's still a part of each of their histories that we will be able to share with them.
I love the idea that Sophie will have at least one connection to her Chinese home, and that friend is just up the road in DC.

Do I hear a road-trip to DC in the works? Aunt Sallie will be happy to play host any time.

Wow -- sounds like a groundswell of support for a roadtrip. I think we'll have to start making plans (assuming that Sophie reacts well to the big beach road trip later this month.)
