The chef recommends

Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib -- A hard read for any American concerned about our current standing in the world. But at least the stories are being told.

Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film -- Brillant. I love books about the movies ("Easy Riders, Raging Bulls," "Gods and Monsters," "Final Cut" etc.) and this is one of the best. You'll walk away hating the Weinsteins as people but loving what they did for cinema.

The Good Earth -- Part of Lisa's and my education on China. Good story, but meandering and a chore to finish. Typical paragraph: "And then, as he sat there in the doorway, giving up his hope and thinking with a dreamy pleasure of lying upon his bed and sleeping easily into death, someone came across his fields."
