Is Dean Smith the greatest college coach ever?

I liked this essay on Yahoo! Answers so much I stole it verbatim:
John Wooden said Dean Smith is the greatest teacher ever. Wooden, Coach K, and Knight have more NCAA titles, but Coach Smith also coached the early part of his career in an era when you had to win the conference touney to get in the tourney. UCLA had a breeze to get through their conference and only had to win 4 games in the NCAA. Even the NCSU team that beat UCLA barely made the NCAAs. They had to beat a good Maryland team in triple overtime. Many times Carolina won the regular season but lost in the ACC tourney and didn't get to play in the NCAAs.

Coach Smith joins Knight as the only coaches to win an NCAA title, NIT title (when it meant something), and Gold medal. After the Soviet Union screwed the USA in 1972, the country turned to Smith. He took Phil Ford and a bunch of Carolina guys and won the gold medal in 1976.

Coach Smith helped to desegregate parts of Chapel Hill. No other school has a family like Carolina basketball. Coach K is a arrogant Yankee who only cares about winning and his program. He is critical of his players when they leave early.

Coach Smith cares about players first and conducting yourself with class before winning. He wants players to do what is best for themselves and their families. He was unselfish and encouraged players like Jordan and Worthy to leave early for the NBA.

Carolina players love Coach Smith and he never tried to make himself bigger than the game (a la Knight or Coach K). He even threatened to resign before breaking Rupp record because of the attention on it would draw.

Smith is all class. He graduated 98% of his players (those leaving early came back and got their degree), he broke NCAA appearance records, and he built a dynasty based on class.

Also, Bobby Knight got the best of Smith in head to head matchups. However, Smith owned Coach K, Rupp, and other coaches.
Amen. Oh yeah, and I met the guy.

Not that I agree with you, but let's put your statement in context:

"Is Dean Smith the greatest college coach ever?"

"...only pro team..."

This is just dumb semantics. The point of the original article was to discuss college basketball. Trying to compare a Shula to a Herb Brooks to a Dean Smith starts to get a little dumb. You might as well ask if the '27 Yankees were better than the '92 Dream Team or the '84 Oilers.
