But no, the real Lisa didn't spend her birthday standing on a streetcorner with a cryptic sign making fun of the Chinese. Instead, it went something like this:
I biked over to Angela [the translator]'s university campus around 6 p.m where she took me on a bike tour around the place. The first thing we did was go in a little mart to get water because I was feeling pretty sick.
Then we biked across the Tanan Lu (that's a big street) to the market (which I just found out last week is very different at night than during the day), and we went to an air conditioned restaurant.
We went bought some handfans and then went into the little indoor supermarket (not all that super, actually ) for eggs and orange juice. I biked home, went up six flights of stairs and didn't break a single egg. I took a cold shower and drank lots of OJ with lots of ice.
There it is -- nothing more exciting than biking around, having heat stroke and drinking juice on your birthday. Bonne anniversaire, cherie!
